Understand every option and know exactly when to use each one
Ask the dealer to give you another card. Use this when your hand total is low (8–16) and the dealer has a strong card showing. The risk of busting (going over 21) rises as your hand total gets higher.
When to use: Hard 8–12, dealer showing 7 or above.
Tell the dealer you don't want any more cards. Use this when your hand is already strong, or when the dealer is showing a weak card and is likely to Bust on their own.
When to use: Hands 17–21, or 12–16 when the dealer shows 2–6.
Double your original bet and receive exactly one more card — no more. This is your most powerful move when you have the edge. Note that not all tables allow Double after Split.
When to use: A hand of 9, 10, or 11 when the dealer is weak.
When you're dealt two cards of equal value, you can split them into two separate hands by placing a second bet of equal value. Always split Aces and 8s.
Always Split: A-A and 8-8. Never Split: 10-10 and 5-5.
Pro Tip: Insurance is a side bet offered when the dealer's face-up card is an Ace. Most blackjack experts strongly advise against taking Insurance, as the house edge on this option is extremely high – around 7%.
